REQUIREMENTS:

To work in the UK you must be registered with the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and obtain a valid PIN number. There are various different processes to obtain your registration depending on whether you are a new registrant, EU applicant or overseas applicant. EU applicants: As a member of the EU, you are able to register with the NMC relatively easily and will not be required to obtain a work permit unless you are from the new member states of Bulgaria and Romania. Furthermore you will not be required to undertake the overseas Nurse Programme (ONP).

Non EU applicants: If you are an overseas applicant, you will be required to undertake an Overseas Nurse Programme (ONP). This is comprised of a 20 day protected learning period, designed to give you a thorough understanding of working in the UK Healthcare system. Learning will include: Law, record keeping, ethics, administration of medicines and inter-professional relationships for example. You may also be required to undergo a three month supervised practice. The NMC will be able to instruct you on which level of ONP you are required to take. You will find a list of approved educational institutions on the NMC website where you can take your ONP. HCL international are unable to assist candidates with 3 months supervised practice placements, however may be able to assist those required to complete 20 days protected learning. However, once you have completed the above, we can certainly assist in attaining a permanent role for you. Simply tell us where and in which speciality and we will start the search for you.

IMMIGRATION:

Due to changes in immigration law, some nurses are no longer on the skilled shortage list. This means that potential employers for non EU citizens may face difficulty in obtaining you a work permit. However for nurses working in the following specialities, work permits can be obtained:

  • Midwives
  • Registered nurse (employed or engaged at Band 7 or 8 of Agenda for Change in their independent sector equivalents
  • Audiology
  • Sleep/ respiratory physiology
  • Neurophysiology
  • Cardiac Physiology
  • Operating Theatre Nurse
  • Clinical Radiology
  • Pathology
  • Critical Care (nurses working in wards with a Level 2 or Level 3 classification)

For those nurses who already have an existing work permit with a current/ previous employer, we can offer assistance with obtaining a transfer of this permit to a new employer if we successfully place you in a new job. Please note that work permits can also be obtained for nurses not on the skills shortage list provided the client can prove they have unsuccessfully tried to recruit an EU citizen.

EU Citizens: With the exception of Romania and Bulgaria, all EU candidates are eligible to work in the UK as an EU citizen without a work permit. However those from Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic are required to apply to register with the Home Office under the new 'Worker Registration Scheme' as soon as they find work. Those from Romania and Bulgaria are still required to obtain a work permit unless they qualify for the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme.

REGISTRATION:

Doctors applying for work in the UK must be registered with the GMC – General Medicine Council. Full registration is required for roles such as RMOs, Senior House Officers and Staff Grade. Should you wish to work on a Consultant Grade Level, you will also be required to be in the Specialist Register with the GMC.

To apply for your registration you must:

  • Be eligible to do so
  • Evidence your qualifications (translated into English)
  • Provide a Certificate of Good Standing
  • Provide proof of Identification
  • Pay a fee of £390 which is valid for a year

Simply fill in an application form online, pay the fee then post all required documentation. You will be invited to an ID check before being granted registration. Time lines vary but generally the process takes approximately 4-6 weeks to obtain registration.

If you are a doctor working outside of the EU wishing to work in the UK, you will be required to apply for the HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrant Permit). You can found out how at the following link: hwww.workingintheuk.gov.uk You will also be required to apply for a PLAB test (Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board) with the GMC whilst also providing evidence of your current capability to practice in the UK. For doctors from the EU wishing to work within the UK for more than one month, you are required to register with the WRS (Workers Registration Scheme) at the Home Office. Once you have been working for 12 months (with no break in employment) you are no longer required to be registered on the WRS and are able to apply for residence permit confirming your rights to live in the UK. You will have to apply for the WRS up to four week after starting a new job. Again HCL International are on hand to offer advice and guidance throughout the whole process enabling you to be placed as quickly as possible.

REGISTRATION:

To work as an AHP, you will need to be registered with Health Care Professional Council, or the Royal Pharmaceutical society of great Britain. This process could take up to six weeks, and longer if you are from abroad.
